Volunteers, 2003 year Volunteers should know how to do everything! In the Hermitage courtyard. Beside the poster "Caution! Cats!" Discussing projects
Here at the Hermitage we have a wide range of roles available to our volunteers, from the help required by various departments and assisting in special events, through to helping develop our own projects. As well as performing various tasks within the museum, we expect volunteers to help with the daily running of the Volunteer Service which includes office administration and other basic tasks. The nature of our work in the museum varies, largely depending on the ongoing needs of each department.
We are always open to new ideas or projects that students should wish to discuss and realize, and volunteers are encouraged to pursue projects that interest them and we ask them to be as pro-active as possible.
The main activities available to volunteers are:
Greeting visitors of the museum and helping administrators in the entrance hall. Here, you will need to explain the rules of the museum to visitors as well as provide information about the museum's collection and temporary exhibitions. You may also occasionally monitor and escort groups of visitors.
Helping in different scientific departments. Here, you will acquaint yourself with the workings of such departments as the Archeological Department or the Antiquity Department. This includes assisting museum staff in carrying out scientific research work, organizing and cataloguing of items in storage, photographing items, and entering information into the museum database.
Helping all museum departments meet guests of the Hermitage Museum at the airport. This also includes such courier work as, for example, always being prepared to deliver invitation cards and presents for guests and friends of the Hermitage.
Helping with the organization of special museum events, conferences, concerts, children's events, and the opening of exhibitions. This will involve aiding in moving art objects and the assembling of exhibitions.
Practicing languages through translation work for some Hermitage publications, editing articles, translating documents and texts. You will also need to handle correspondence with other institutions and museums, incoming interns on educational and cultural programs and other internship matters. This may also involve teaching museum staff foreign languages.
Developing multimedia and design projects. Here you have the opportunity to join the many current projects run by the Volunteer Service such as developing the museum website, creating videos or presentations, or designing booklets and flyers. Equally, we are always open to your inspiration for working out and realizing your own creative ideas and in fact encourage volunteers to pursue projects in connection with their own personal goals and interests.
Developing educational programs and implementing them in the cooperation with other museums and institutions. This may include conducting interactive programs, games for students and children and running competitions.
